Backyard Baseball By AtariThis game is a great follow up to the many Backyard baseball games before it. I have been a long time fan of the series and this game just proves why. The series is updates its game annually and with great games with plenty of game modes. I actually was surprised on how much it had added in two years. I definitely think that the game is worth buying. It has plenty of hours of game play and makes a good time with friends. I will take the game in stages so the review can be its in its fullest form.
Characters
The characters detail is great. Its obvious that plenty of work was put into it. The characters involve major league superstars and to show their creativity they made their own characters. The characters they make are great to they all have their own stories. They actually differ in statistics! They make new ones and bring back the legends. They're called the Backyard Kids. You can make your own backyard kid too! You can choose how he looks and choose how well he does in different areas. Its great. Then the other characters the real MLB people are called the pros. It has great players with great detail. One of the new features that I like is to get some of the great players you have to unlock so its an added challenge. Not to mention that it makes it easy to pick teams. It categorizes them for what there good at. Its extremely convenient. Just All in all a great design of the characters.
Field of Play
The Playing Fields really show the games roots. With normal suburban places to play on with touches of creativity. The fields are well designed. The graphics are pretty good on the backdrops. This impresses me to think that they can put this kind of detail into a game in a year time period. If it wasn't already obvious by the cover this game is aimed to look cartoon-ish. So don't be expecting to see any kind of attempt at making it realistic. Not to mention that there's a good amount of playing fields. This side of the game will not let you down.
Game-play
The one player game play truly is great with three different types of game play. The first is quick game. Quick game allows you to start a game immediately. Unlike the other two modes. It picks your team for you. That feature can be annoying when you get into the game because sometimes it doesn't pick you a very good team. All quick game is is basically randomly picking everything for you. Like the field, the teams, and the players are picked for you. This feature is for the not very patient gamer. The next game mode is season. In this game mode you basically do what the title says play a season. You choose your players from the character selection I talked about earlier. After choosing players you choose what team you want to play for. You can choose from major league teams or from the backyard teams. After deciding on a team you can adjust the settings for the season (difficulty, innings, etc). Throughout the season you can trade, play, and sign new players as you go. This makes it have a much more empowered feel and puts you in the manager position. At the end of the season you are able to play a tournament. You are placed by how well you did in the season. This game mode is for the hardcore sports gamer. The final game mode is tournament. Its basically the same thing as the playoffs in the season mode but with a different look. Not to mention that you don't have to go through the whole season first. You have to go though the same drafting process as season and basically the same kind of tournaments. So this is for the casual gamer. The multiplayer allows you to face aginest your friends. You go though a draft process. Nothing of huge change. So that sums up to be a pretty good gameplay.
So after reviewing the game I think that Backyard Baseball 2010 gets a 8.9. out of 10
So here is the rundown
Pros
-many game modes
-good design
-great for kids
Cons
-loses its steam fast
-doesn't span to many
